A PV to EV State of Mind

With the number of electric vehicles on the road growing and the solar industry enjoying rampant success, a community of "PV to EV" people has emerged. PV to EV is the simple concept of juicing your plug-in car with a photovoltaic system instead of coal or natural gas. With more automakers making room on their lots for EVs -- and solar leasing offers everywhere you turn -- this peas-and-carrots combo is easier than ever.

Imagine everyone being their own renewable-energy producer, liberated from trips to the gas station. It's exciting, especially when you think of all the times you've read about the enormous profits of oil and gas companies. Sierra Club board member Rob Wilder, featured in the news segment in the video, is a PV-to-EV guy. He wrote a recent report (pdf) about the thousands of dollars he's saved in fueling since acquiring a plug-in car and panels. "The sun has nicely made our roof 'fueling station' now free," he writes. "This idea works. Looking ahead it could grow American self-reliance, save on peoples' bills, plus become great fun to boot."

PV and EV companies see the harmony in this. This week "solar installer REC Solar announced it will start selling General Electric's WattStation, a level-2 charger that should fill up a car in under eight hours," reports Earth2Tech. We've already seen similar announcments of partnerships the past year.

These developments suggest that true energy independence for Americans will be achievable in the coming years. Dave Erb, an automotive engineer and Sierra Club member, in his Solar Today how-to column on quitting oil offers an example of how easy PV to EV is getting: "An electric scooter consumes well under 100 watt-hours per mile. A 200-watt PV panel and microinverter can put more than 600 watt-hours per day on the grid. Conservatively, that's five miles of clean travel per day, at a cost many Americans would find trivial. OPEC has no say in the matter."
