Natural Gas: What's Really Happening in Dimock

Robin Mann
On Tuesday, the Sierra Club stood with residents of Dimock, Pennsylvania, environmental groups, and even celebrities to ensure victims of local natural gas fracking continued to receive clean water.

The oil and gas company Cabot Corp., arrived in Dimock in 2008.  Almost immediately after they began to frack wells, families saw a severe difference in their water quality.  Since then, under order by the State, Cabot delivered fresh water to each family whose water was tainted because of the drilling.

But recently, that all changed.

Last month, Pennsylvania Governor Corbett and state Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Mike Krancer chose to let Cabot industries off the hook for the damages they caused and not require them to deliver water to victims of contamination. The Sierra Club and other groups see this as intolerable and will not sit on the sidelines while Cabot and State leaders decide to neglect these families in need.

Robin Mann and the Sautners2This water contamination in Dimock is a clear example of the natural gas companies like Cabot cutting corners just to save a buck. And now they're refusing to take responsibility for their mistakes and trying to sweep Dimock families under the carpet.  It is even more awful to see Cabot deny support for these families even when their stock was named the strongest of 2011 by the Wall Street Journal.

The Sierra Club is joining other groups and organizations to ensure these eleven families continue to have water free of fracking fluids.  Sierra Club's Pennsylvania Chapter donated one tanker of fresh water last week. That's Sierra Club Board President Robin Mann in the photo above helping deliver water to the Sautners, an affected family, and then standing with them that evening.

The Atlantic Chapter and the National Natural Gas Reform Campaign both plan to help with future deliveries.

While it is unbelievable that during the holiday season, a time of giving, Cabot Corp and Governor Corbett have turned a blind eye to the people of Dimock - the Sierra Club will continue to expose the dirty natural gas industry and keep clean water in Dimock's faucets.

If you would like to donate to help ensure the families of Dimock continue to receive clean water, check out Water Defense's website here.
