As colleges and universities in Indiana (such as Ball State University) take important steps to eliminate their use of coal-fired power, Purdue University is pushing to increase its reliance on coal. The Sierra Club is fighting Purdue’s efforts to replace the 50-year-old coal boiler at its power plant with so-called “clean” coal technology.
Together with the Hoosier Environmental Council, the Club is leading the charge to block these plans by challenging the construction permit for the project. Said permit was recently approved by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management—an agency that has long had a cozy relationship with the coal industry.
