Green Your Water Use: Landscaping

Xeriscaping in a Colorado garden This is a big week for environmentalists: We'll celebrate Earth Day on April 22. To protect one of our planet's most precious resources, this week's tips will focus on water conservation.

Tip #2: Plant a Water-Wise Garden

The average North American residence uses half of its water outside, so smart landscaping practices can make a big difference in household water consumption. Scale back on turf and opt for drought-tolerant, native plants. Trees, shrubs, and flowers should be suited to your region as well as to your yard's microclimates. Plants' needs vary, but a good general rule is to water deeply but less frequently.
