Hungry for Change: A new U.N. report concludes that a global shift toward a more vegetarian diet is necessary to stem the worst effects of climate change, as well as to heal hunger in poverty-stricken places. Guardian

Gulf Update: BP reports that it was able to capture some of its oil with a containment cap but long-term success isn’t assured. Meanwhile, Obama postponed his scheduled Asia trip to tend to the disaster. Reuters and CNN

Deep Trouble:
The 30-story sinkhole that opened up in Guatemala City earlier this week was human-caused, says an expert. Piping problems, poor regulations, and the fact that the region is built on pumice fill all contributed. National Geographic

Up in Arms:
After Brazil last month approved the construction of the world's third-largest dam, which would divert the Xingu River and flood 500 square miles of rainforest, indigenous groups are preparing to go to war to preserve their region. ENN

Pain in the Leg: A Greenpeace activist is in serious condition after a fisherman on a French commercial-fishing boat harpooned him through the leg after the activist attempted to release tuna from the boat’s net. France24
