Green Your Dad: The Golf Buff

Golf and the environment Dads tend to like things (cars, electronics, golf…) that aren’t always best for Mother Earth. Since Father’s Day is Sunday, this week’s tips suggest ways to help your dad be greener. Maybe you’ll get a gift idea or two too.

Tip #3: For the Lad on the Links

Though it seems like a lovely way to spend a day with Dad, golfing is, ironically, not green at all. Thousands of trees are often cut down to develop a single golf course, which is then regularly sprayed with untold amounts of pesticides and herbicides, and irrigated with some 300,000 gallons of water per day. Instead, invite your father on a hike, bicycle ride, or kayak trip in a pristine, protected place. If you simply can’t get him off the green, however, suggest that he play on Audubon-certified courses and buy pre-owned clubs and balls.

Tell us: How do you green your golf game?
