Would Gandhi Eat This Pig?

Think of this cute pig on world farm animals day tomorrow What would Gandhi do tomorrow? Well, the famously nonviolent activist might celebrate his birthday, October 2, by observing World Farm Animals Day. Whether or not you follow a Gandhi-inspired vegetarian diet, World Farm Animals Day offers a chance to reconsider the types of food you put on your plate.

The timing for a food epiphany couldn't be better, considering the recent recall of salmonella-tainted eggs, which was followed by unappetizing reports of extremely unsanitary (and, many would argue, inhumane) conditions at factory farms. Not only do concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) pose a threat to human health, they're also notorious polluters.

It's not all bad news, though. The growth of the local, organic, and slow-food movements means that it's easier than ever to find nourishment that's in keeping with a green lifestyle. Consider celebrating farm animals tomorrow by opting for fare that's locally sourced, humanely raised, and organic. You might also ponder switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet, visiting a local farmer, or taking a trip to an animal-rescue center such as Farm Sanctuary.
