Green Your Pest Control: Fend off an Ant Attack

Ants Sooner or later everyone has a pest problem. Whether you're contending with a small ant colony or a rat the size of your schnauzer, this week's tips will help you get rid of household vermin in humane, eco-friendly ways.

Tip #1: Stop ants in their tracks.

So you left the honey out last night and woke up to a river of ants. Don't buy the standard toxic traps — they only kill 10% of the intruders and leave the rest traipsing poison over your kitchen counters. Instead, follow these simple steps: After vacuuming up the ants, clean their foraging trails with homemade citrus-, pepper-, or vinegar-based repellent. Make sure all your food is stored securely in the fridge or in ant-proof containers equipped with rubber gaskets. Finally, set out boric acid traps, which are the most effective and the least toxic to mammals.

What's your eco-friendly ant-contol strategy?
