Shark Myths Quiz: Big and Scary

Whale shark

It's shark season, which means Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week is almost here. Before the week of razor teeth and ominous fins begins, take our quiz to see if you know your shark facts from fiction. (Hint: Don't believe everything you saw in Jaws.)

Shark Myths Quiz:

4.) The bigger the shark, the bigger their prey. True or False?

False! We often think that because sharks are such large fish, they are also all carnivorous hunters.

But whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea, are filter feeders. At up to 40 feet long, these massive sharks eat a diet consisting mostly of plankton. Divers dream to see these massive, gentle creatures underwater — although whale sharks move with such awe-inducing grace that keeping snorkel in mouth may be difficult.

The second largest fish and shark in the world is the basking shark. Basking sharks are also filter feeders and can grow to 32 feet long. They have incredibly large mouths, but these sharks don't have any human-sized entrees on their menu. Lucky us!

Check out the video below of a curious whale shark with some scuba divers to see just how big these sharks get!
