the japanese are miles ahead of anyone when it comes to hybrids but no one is properly investing the production of biodiesels which would really make a difference.

One part of it is that the Honda hybrids are all "assist" hybrids with the single electric motor/generator tied directly to the engine flywheel. What this means is that when the motor is turning the engine is turning and vise versa. This means that the car can't ever move on electric alone with the engine stopped and the car can't ever use pure regenerative braking to slow down because there will always be some engine braking. The Toyota hybrids are all "full" hybrids with a "power split device" which means that neither of the 2 motor/generators are directly tied to the engine crank and as such the car can both move under electric power with the engine stopped and can have full regenerative braking with no engine or friction braking from about 42MPH down to about 7MPH (Prius).
