In my (fairly left wing) world, I find resistance to CFLs and other sensible, progressive life choices (organic food, avoidance of mercury-infused fish, turning lights off when not in the room, avoidance of GM foods, more fuel efficient cars, etc.) primarily from people in my parents' generation 65-75 year olds). Younger (and older even, to a lesser extent) people are much more likely to look at the facts and weigh up their options before deciding.
I think about this a lot, and the only explanation I can come up with is that these are the baby boomers (or thereabouts) that grew up with Great New Inventions like moving to the suburbs, 2 car families, television, small appliances, junk food, etc. and take any suggestions on how thy live their lives as a very personal attack on them and whate they stand for.
Any thoughts/potential future article on this, Mr Green?
