'Go Green,' Says Beauty Queen

Allison Rogers, crowned Miss Rhode Island in April 2006, is now traveling the state raising awareness about global warming and promoting energy conservation. As a college student, she organized the Harvard Northeast Climate Conference in 2004 and was active in the Harvard Green Campus Initiative, which has reduced university utility costs by $1 million a year and global warming emissions by 20 million pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents.

For her undergraduate thesis, Rogers examined the connection between ecological and religious values. She is now pursuing post-graduate work on grassroots organizing with Harvard Professor Marshall Ganz, one of the organizers of the 2005 Sierra Summit. As part of her studies, she plans to lead a neighborhood walk and several phone banks for the Sierra Club's Cool Cities campaign this spring.
