Coloradans Rally to Support Clean Air and Defend EPA
The last weekend in February, the Sierra Club and an alliance of partner groups held rallies in Boulder and Denver in support of the Clean Air Act and strong EPA standards to protect public health. Bills now before the U.S. Congress would slash or eliminate pollution prevention programs and limit the EPA's ability to regulate greenhouse gases.
"In Boulder (above), 140 people joined us on a pleasant Saturday afternoon," says Club organizer Roger Singer. "Then in Denver (below), 70 people and four media outlets joined us on a cloudy, unsettled Sunday."
Both rallies were preceded by "honk & wave" gatherings on the street corners.
"We also heard from faith community leaders, college and high school students, and an array of conservation partners," says Singer, below, firing up the crowd at the state capitol in Denver.
"The majority of Americans support clean air and clean water, not corporate profits," says Singer. "Our Denver rally followed a huge pro-union rally held at the same site the day before and a pro-solar rally the day before that, so I stressed the renewable energy economics and good-paying jobs creation that naturally connect with our public health work."
Singer gives kudos to 1Sky's regional organizer, Micah Parkin, and Sierra Club volunteers Donna & Ken Bonetti and Mimsi & John Milton for their work putting the events together.
