Global Wind Day: Around the Country

Kite and sign

Today, Sierra Club members, organizers and volunteers from across the country held events to celebrate Global Wind Day, an international celebration of wind energy and its role in powering our future. In 2011, more than 230 Global Wind Day events took place in 40 countries around the world, and this year is expected to be even bigger.

We held numerous events today and added voices to the growing chorus of people who believe wind power is a critical way to move America closer to a clean energy future.
For example, the Sierra Club North Star Chapter held an event at Loring Park in Minneapolis, flying kites, making pinwheels, and educating the public on wind power and its benefits (see photo above).

Meanwhile, Sierra Club organizers in Columbus, Ohio, played "turbine trivia" (pictured below) at the Columbus Commons as part of Commons for Kids day and activities.

And on the Jersey Shore, volunteers flew kites on the beach to show their support for bringing offshore wind power to the Garden State. The wind was so powerful that organizers had trouble keeping their signs from blowing away!

From kites to pinwheels to wind turbines, today was an exciting opportunity for Sierra Club members and organizers to spend time outdoors with their families and celebrate a true American success story. The Sierra Club's Global Wind Day events today showed that there is strong support for wind as a sustainable, clean energy solution for the generations to come.
